Overview

Gloam ("the app") is a daily micro-journal for iOS. Journal entries, mood data, photo attachments, and preferences are stored on your device using SwiftData and UserDefaults. There are no user accounts, no cloud storage, no backend servers, and no separate app analytics. The free version may show Google AdMob banner ads outside the writing screen. This policy explains what data Gloam processes and how it is handled.

Gloam is developed and operated by TheChosenVictor LLC ("we," "us," "our"). Victor Solano owns TheChosenVictor LLC.

Data Stored on Device

Gloam stores the following data entirely on your device. None of this data is uploaded, transmitted, or accessible to anyone other than you.

Journal Entries

Each entry includes your written text, the date, the prompt you were shown, and timestamps. Entries are stored in an on-device database (SwiftData) within the app's sandboxed container.

Mood Data

Mood selections (such as "Peaceful," "Grateful," or "Anxious") are stored alongside each journal entry in the same on-device database.

Photo Attachments (Pro)

Pro users can attach photos to entries. Photos are stored in the app's sandboxed container on your device. They are not encrypted separately but are protected by iOS data protection.

App Preferences

Settings such as reminder time, onboarding state, and purchase status are stored in UserDefaults on your device.

No Cloud, No Backend, No Analytics

Gloam does not upload your journal entries, mood data, prompts, photos, or app preferences to the cloud. There is no backend server, no user account system, no cloud sync, no app-owned telemetry, and no app-owned crash reporting. Your journal exists only on your device.

Advertising and Consent

The free version of Gloam may show Google AdMob banner ads. Gloam Pro removes ads.

Gloam uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK to request and display ads and the Google User Messaging Platform SDK to collect and manage consent where required. These Google SDKs may process information such as device identifiers, IP address, advertising data, app interactions, crash logs, diagnostics, and performance data for ad delivery, ad measurement, fraud prevention, and service improvement. Journal entries, mood selections, prompts, and photo attachments are not sent to Google for ad targeting.

For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, Gloam uses Google's certified consent management flow before requesting ads when consent is required. Users can consent, decline consent, or manage options in the consent message. If privacy options are required in your region, Gloam also provides a privacy options entry point in Settings.

Camera Access

Gloam requests camera access only when you choose to attach a photo to a journal entry (Pro feature). Photos taken through the app are saved only within the app's sandboxed container and are never saved to your camera roll unless you explicitly choose to.

Notifications

Gloam can send local notifications to remind you to journal each evening. These notifications are scheduled entirely on your device. No notification data is sent to any server. You can disable reminders at any time in the app's settings or in iOS Settings.

In-App Purchases

Purchases are handled by Apple via StoreKit. Gloam does not process payment cards or billing credentials directly. Purchase validation happens on-device. No receipts are sent to external servers.

Data We Do Not Collect

Gloam does not collect or request:

  • Your name, email address, or phone number
  • Your precise GPS location. Google AdMob may use your IP address to infer approximate location for ad delivery, as described in the Advertising and Consent section above.
  • Your contacts, calendar, or health data
  • Browsing or search history
  • The text of your journal entries, mood selections, prompts, or photo attachments
  • Crash logs or diagnostics from Gloam itself

Data Storage Summary

StorageWhat is stored
SwiftDataJournal entries, mood data, photo attachments, app settings
UserDefaultsPreferences, onboarding state, purchase status

All data resides within the app's sandboxed container, which is protected by iOS data protection.

Data Retention

  • On-device journal data is retained until you explicitly delete it or uninstall the app.
  • AdMob data is retained by Google per their data retention policies.
  • StoreKit purchase records are retained by Apple per their policies.

Data Deletion

You can delete individual journal entries from the timeline view. Uninstalling Gloam removes all app data from your device, including all journal entries, mood data, photo attachments, and preferences. This action is irreversible.

Your Rights

For All Users

You may:

  • Access your data by viewing your journal entries and settings within the app.
  • Delete your data by removing individual entries or uninstalling the app.
  • Export your data (Pro feature) as PDF or plain text.
  • Control ad tracking by changing your preference in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, or by changing ad consent preferences in Gloam Settings where privacy options are available.

European Economic Area (GDPR)

If you are located in the EEA, you have the following rights under the General Data Protection Regulation:

  • Right to access (Art. 15): request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification (Art. 16): request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure (Art. 17): request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Right to restrict processing (Art. 18): request that we limit how we use your data.
  • Right to data portability (Art. 20): request a machine-readable copy of your data.
  • Right to object (Art. 21): object to processing of your data for certain purposes.
  • Right to withdraw consent (Art. 7): withdraw your ad tracking or ad personalization consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Since Gloam stores journal data locally on your device with no backend, you already have direct control over your journal data. Use the export feature (Pro) to obtain a copy, or uninstall the app to exercise your right to erasure. For data processed by Google AdMob, contact Google directly using their privacy tools.

For EEA users, Google acts as an independent data controller for the advertising data it collects through AdMob. TheChosenVictor LLC acts as the data controller for the Gloam app. You may contact us at [email protected] for any GDPR-related requests.

Data Protection Contact: TheChosenVictor LLC handles privacy requests for this app. A separate Data Protection Officer is not designated for the scale and nature of the processing described here. For all data protection inquiries, contact [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

California (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you:

  • Right to know: what personal information is collected and how it is used.
  • Right to delete: request deletion of your personal information.
  • Right to opt-out of sale/sharing: opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information.
  • Right to non-discrimination: equal service regardless of whether you exercise your privacy rights.

Gloam does not sell your journal data or app-local content. When ad tracking or personalized advertising is enabled, advertising identifiers and related ad data may be shared with Google AdMob for advertising purposes. You can opt out at any time by denying tracking in the iOS App Tracking Transparency prompt, changing your preference in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, or changing ad consent preferences in Gloam Settings where privacy options are available.

To exercise any CCPA rights, contact us at [email protected].

Children's Privacy

Gloam is rated 4+ on the App Store and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect journal content or app-local personal information from children. Journal entries, mood selections, prompts, and photo attachments are not transmitted off the device. AdMob may process advertising data when ads are served, as described in this policy.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
