A visitor count taken straight off a server log counts anything that can send an HTTP request. This reads your log locally, counts it the usual way and again with an asset-load check, and shows you the gap between the two.

Method

How it works

01Drop in your access log. The file is read in slices inside this browser, and nothing is uploaded.
02Caddy JSON lines and the Nginx or Apache combined format are both detected from the file. Behind Cloudflare, the Cf-Connecting-Ip header is used instead of the CDN edge address, and the report says so.
03Each address is credited with a pageview only when it made a successful 2xx GET for a document and also fetched at least one CSS, JS, or image file. The difference between that number and the naive one is the correction factor.

Boundaries

Limits

The verified number is a floor, not a census. A returning reader with a warm cache asks for the HTML and nothing else, so this method files that real person as a non-browser. Your true audience sits above the verified number and well below the naive one.
Unique addresses are not people. Households, VPNs, carrier NAT, and rotating IPv6 prefixes both merge and split real readers.
The asset test only works when assets actually reach your origin. If a CDN serves your static files without hitting the server, they will not be in this log and almost nothing will verify.
Only Caddy JSON lines and the Nginx or Apache combined format are read. A line neither format matches is counted and shown, not silently dropped.
The reader accepts uncompressed text. Gunzip a rotated roll before dropping it in.
